06/06/06. The one we've all be waiting for.
In the end, the day wasn't more or less wicked any other. Heck, for all we know the real number is 616 though 212 and 818 are real contenders in the wicked number contest.
The trench got 3/4 done. The rest will get done tomorow. The trench is the subject of much controversy. Does it need to be dug under the footing? Will there ever really be that much moisture against the side of the house? Do we really need to use CSA approved 4" plastic pipe, or will any ol' 4" plastic pipe do? What is the appropriate drain rock size? What do we do in those instances where there is another pipe (sewage, electric, etc.) going into the footing? Do we dig under it? Do we run it over the existing service pipes? Everyone has a different opinion and no one has a definite answer. I love it when that happens in construction, especially when it comes to issues like drainage around a footing.
Because the pad is made of 3" minus and compacted to "near record compation" there was a lot of this action:
Yup, breaking rocks in the hot sun. If you would have told me in college that I really needn't fret about that economics paper because in the end I would not be managing a "hedge fund" but instead be smashing rocks with a pick in the heat of the day, well, I don't know what I would have done. But really, it was easy. With each swing of the pick, I visualized I was splitting one of Satan's many skulls, then the work did itself.
Tomorow is more of the same. GET BEHIND ME SATAN!
As an aside, I have been remiss in not mentioning our neighbour Jim and our most special helper Megan. Jim is a retired machinist from Manitoba who worked in a refinery for 32 years. He rides a Honda ST 1300. Megan is here from Ottawa and has, by the sweat of her brow, impressed the ol' timers in the neighbourhood with her industry and ability. Once gross with concrete, Megan scrubbed, de-nailed and piled these with care.
We couldn't have done what little we've done with out them. A big thanks to them both!
